Stanley Ward

May 20, 1946 — April 1, 2018

One of Summers County's finest carpenters, citizens, and neighbors, Stanley H. Ward was called home from Pipestem on Sunday, April 1, 2018 at the age of 71.

Stanley served in the Vietnam War for the United States Air Force as a mechanic. After the war he was stationed primarily in Virginia, before resettling in his hometown of Hinton. He was extremely proud of his service to his country and continued honoring it throughout his life with his participation in veteran events in Summers County.

After Stanley's military service he partnered with his brother Roger, continuing the family tradition of carpentry that their father started. As Roger moved on to other areas, Stanley stayed within the hometown he loved so much. His precision, his honesty, and his integrity served him well during his many decades as an independent contractor; these same traits served him well as he continued on to Lowe's, primarily in Princeton, WV but also in several stores throughout the region. His leadership and his commitment to his community informed his work through every period of his life.

Stanley was a faithful member of several congregations over the years; he had most recently been a member of Bellepoint Baptist Church. His family and friends know he has been reunited with others who have passed on before him: having ice cold water in a mason jar with his mother Dorothy Blackburn Ward; finding four leaf clovers with his father Stanley Ward; playing peek-a-boo with his baby sister Donnie and baby brother Bobby. We know he will be on the golf course with his brother Roger. At least in Heaven, he no longer has to fight over cherry candy with Roger.

Stanley is survived by his loving wife Christine. She will always cherish the memories from their first date over 33 years ago to the present. Their love and devotion only deepened as time went by. Their love for family and the capacity to adopt new friends as part of their family circle was evident in their every day lives. Their care and faithfulness to each other was a testament of their love; Stanley and Christine truly felt they were soulmates. Throughout the years, Christine was ever present by his side. She will greatly miss his smile, his laughter, his optimism, and his zest for life. She will miss him saying "I love you a bushel and a peck, and a hug around the neck...no, TWO hugs around the neck". Those arms both protected her and shared in the many joys that the two of them had together.

In addition, he is survived by step-siblings Linda Pack (Harold) of Phoenix, AZ and Jessica Drake and Jimmy Bragg, both of Sandstone, WV; five children: Sheila Pillath (Scott) of Gloucester, VA, Michelle Ward of Raleigh, NC, Mike Ward (Kathy Cales) of Nimitz, WV, Kim Ward (Andrew Glasscock) of South Charleston, WV, and John Burgess of Boston, MA. Also left to carry on his legacy of love and compassion for all people are his seven grandchildren: Ashton, Sean, Rhiannon, Kyle, Cole, Mikey and Kolten. Stanley will also be missed by a multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Ward family slogan is "Strong roots, many branches" and this is something Stanley exemplified, serving as the president of the Ward Reunion for over 40 years. He enjoyed every part it... the cake walk, egg toss, horseshoes, bingo, wiener roast; but most of all, he loved the hours spent reminiscing with family and friends.

Continuing his preservation of both bonds and history, Stanley was the president of the Sandstone High School All Classes Reunion for 17 years, as well as administering his own class reunion. Through this opportunity, he introduced a scholarship fund for a Summers County High School graduate in the name of his former high school. Stanley was also the driving force behind the National Park Service installing a marker and memorabilia case at the Sandstone Visitor's Center on the original site of Sandstone High.

Services to honor Stanley's life will be held at Ronald Meadows Funeral Home in Hinton, WV on Friday, April 6, 2018.
