            William Alfred “Bill” Hughes, 82, of Hinton went home to be with the Lord Sunday March 31, 2024, at his home following a short illness.

            Born August 19, 1941, at Hinton he was the son of the late William French and Bernice Louise Lilly Hughes.  He graduated from Rainelle High School in 1959 where he excelled in sports.  Bill proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam War and served onboard a ship during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.  He graduated from Concord College in with a BS in Education and was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. After graduation he started his teaching and coaching career at Sandstone Jr. High School then moved to Hinton High School serving as a Phys Ed and Health Teacher, Athletic Director, Assistant High School Football Coach and then as the Head Football Coach of the Bobcats.  Bill retired from teaching and coaching in 1998.  A member of VFW Post 4500 and the Hinton Elks Lodge 821, he enjoyed golfing, spending time with family, friends and his beloved cats.

            Those left to cherish his memory include two sons, Mark Hughes of Princeton and Keith Hughes of Bristol, VA; two grandchildren, Bryan Hughes of Hinton and Sutton Hughes of Bristol, VA; one great grandchild, Jayk Lee Hughes of Franklin, OH; special friend, Wanda Mitchem Lusk; lifelong friend, Jim Boley. 

            Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Friday, April 5, 2024, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating.  Burial will follow in the Lilly Crews Cemetery at Nimitz.  Friends may call from noon until service time on Friday at the funeral parlors.

            Former players will serve as pallbearers.

            Willowwood  golfing buddies and his friends in the “Old Guy” coffee group will serve as honorary pallbearers.

            The family would like to extend special thanks to Lisa and her hospice nurses, everyone who visited, brought food, helped with transportation and prayed for our Dad.

            In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Southern WV or to the Hospice of your choice.
