Mildred Coleman

January 12, 1920 — August 17, 2018

Mrs. Mildred Glenna Coleman, 98, passed away peacefully at 12:15 A.M. on August 17, 2018, at home, surrounded by her family.
Mildred was born January 12, 1920, at Green Sulphur Springs. She was the first of ten children born to the late Allen Jasper and Lora Amelia Williams Brinegar. At age 6, she moved with her family to a farm near Hix, a part of which has been home to her for most of her life.
Mildred's lifelong ambition was to become a teacher; however, she was forced to leave her education dreams behind when she had no way to get to school. She walked the mountain trails to Hinton and back for over six weeks during her sophmore year, about a six mile hike each way, however upon her arrival home one evening covered with ice in her hair and her hands and feet frostbitten, her father decided that would be her last day. Years later, at the age of 71, she was successful in studying for and obtaining her GED. What a happy day that was for her.
Mildred was an avid gardener, who loved caring for her garden and providing fresh vegetables for family and friends. She enjoyed canning and preserving and all other types of food preservation. In addition she was an accomplished seamstress and quilter, and even worked as a carpenter's helper for three years in the late 1980s.
Mildred was a faithful member of the Shockley Hill church of Christ which meets on Tug Creek Mountain Road. She felt her life's purpose was to make sure each person with whom she came in contact went away knowing the plan of salvation as it is written in the Gospel.
In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Robert M. Coleman; an infant son; a son-in-law, Freeman Wiley Holder; three brothers, Golden Brinegar, Curtis W. Brinegar and Gordon Alphon Brinegar; three sisters, Gaye Pauline Rose, Goldie Mae Sears and Glenda Jean Epler; five sisters-in-law and eleven brothers-in-law.
She is survived by two daughters, Reva Kay Holder and Sarah Lee Brown and husband Roger, all of Tug Creek Mountain Road; three sisters, Geneva Breen of Social Circle, GA, Gladys Akers of Daniels and Cecelia Gail Martin of Charleston; six sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Jeremy Paschall from the Carriage Drive church of Christ in Beckley officiating. Burial will follow in the Shockley Hill Cemetery on Tug Creek Mountain Road. Friends may call from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the funeral parlors.
Nephews will serve as pall bearers.
Arrangements are by the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors of Hinton.
