Mary Meadows

May 6, 1916 — December 13, 2015

MARY CATHERINE BAKER MEADOWS , 99, passed away on December 13, 2015 at St. Mary's Highland Hills Retirement Village in Watkinsville, GA.
She was born in Alderson, WV (Muddy Creek Mountain) on May 6, 1916 to William Lake Baker and Maggie Clevie Arbaugh Baker. She graduated from Nursing School at the Hinton (WV) Hospital in 1936 and worked there, where she met and later married O. Clifford Meadows on August 8, 1937. She and her husband lived and raised their children in Huntington, WV for many years before their retirement in 1972. They were members of the Fifth Ave Baptist Church in Huntington.
Upon retirement, they moved to Hinton, WV, living in her husband's childhood home on the Greenbrier River. She remained in Hinton after his death in 1982, until she moved to near Athens, GA in 2009, to be close to family.
While in Hinton, she was very active in Garden Club activities and served as President for many years. Her love of flowers never wavered. She was also a member of Central Baptist Church and the Woman's Club. She kept her Registered Nurse's license current until she was about 85 years old, and volunteered with the local Red Cross.
In Georgia, she resided at Highland Hills Village Retirement Community first in Independent Living and then in January of 2015, was transferred to Memory Care. In her younger years she loved to make Salt Rising Bread and enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading, canning and playing Scrabble, Bingo, and Skipbo. She also loved hunting ginseng in the WV mountains.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Stephen P. Meadows, her sister, Mabel V. Rander, brothers Perry W. Baker and Elbert O. Baker, and son-in-law, Richard J. Hodges. She is survived by her son Clifford A. Meadows (Bonnie Crouse) of Winston-Salem, NC; her daughter, Linda Meadows Hodges of Athens, GA; daughter-in-law, Joan Meadows of Cape Carteret, NC; four grand daughters Mary Hodges Conley (Chris), Melinda Hodges, both of Athens, GA, Merry Meadows Janes, Irving, TX, and Marcia Meadows Hyla (Bret) of Cape Carteret, NC.
In addition, she had three great grandchildren, Aaron Conley of Athens, GA and Blake and Genevieve Hyla of Cape Carteret, NC. Also included in her family are Noah Barger (Ivy), and their children, Grace and Davis of Chapel Hill, NC. She had many loving and devoted nieces and nephews too numerous to name, but she appreciated and loved them all dearly until the end. They were ever attentive and never let her feel forgotten. Family was everything to her. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She is already missed by those she has left behind.
The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation for the staff of St. Mary's Center for Alzheimer's and Dementia Care, Watkinsville, GA. In addition to providing the highest degree of professional services, they cared for her in the most loving manner possible, and we are deeply grateful.
She will be returned to Hinton, WV, where her funeral will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Entombment will be held in the Greenbrier Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 18, 2015 and for one hour prior to the service.
