Joseph Vernon Cox, 81, of Stanaford passed away Monday, September 29, 2025 at the Ohio State University Medical Center following a long illness.
Born July 7, 1944 at Ellison Ridge/Dunns, he was the son of the late Columbus “Lummie” Cox and Sylvia Moye Cox.
Mr. Cox was the founder/operator of Certified Welding Service (CWS), which is currently J & J Fabricating, owned by his son. He was a man with a fifth grade education who accomplished everything in life that he set out to do. He was of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed attending dinners at Tempa Church.
Mr. Cox’s greatest joy in life was watching his grandson, Degan play baseball. He enjoyed dirt track racing, hunting, fishing, operating equipment, raising cattle, and attending the stock market. He also thoroughly enjoyed visiting with the pipe liners that rented from him. His last passion was dabbling in buying and selling land.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Patsy Lowe (John) and Jessie Mae Krumholz (Karl); three brothers, Clinton Cox, Leslie Cox, and Russell Cox; three nephews, Mel Cooper, Jeff Cox, and Michael “Scrapper” Scarbrough; and one niece, Shirley Richmond.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 58 years, Katie Bea (Woods) Cox; children Joseph “Joey” Cox and companion Lindsey and daughter Patricia Williams (Ricky); one grandson Degan Slade Williams; adopted by heart son Shane Kinder; two grand dogs, Rocky and Cash; two sisters, Mary Ann Milam, and Betty Scarbrough; several nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Memorial services will be at 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 9, 2025 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors of Hinton, with Pastors Bobby Reed and Tommy Dove officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Friends may visit from 6:00 until 8:00 on Thursday at the funeral parlor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tom Poe Foundation supporting the Independence High School Baseball Program, 111 Meadow Lane, Crab Orchard, WV, 25827, on behalf of his grandson, Degan Slade Williams.
Employees of J&J Fabricating & Trailers Inc. will serve as honorary pallbearers.
