Elmer Earl Patton, 88, of Hinton, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2016 at home surrounded by his family, following a long illness.
Born February 24, 1927 at Meadow Creek, WV, he was the son of the late Carl Patton and Ada Bryson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.
In his younger years, Elmer worked as a farm hand. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving with the 382nd Military Police Bn., where he was a military policeman and rifle sharpshooter. He then retired as an employee of C&O Railroad where he worked as an equipment operator and a track worker.
He enjoyed growing a vegetable garden, planting flowers, and loved being in the sunshine. After retirement, he spent most of his time working with many of his projects or helping others. He loved being surrounded by his grandchildren and great grandchildren and was affectionately referred to as "PawPaw" by many.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Gwendolyn Wilfong Patton; three sons, Eugene Wilfong and wife Dreama of Meadow Creek, Danny Patton of Hinton, Gary Patton of Hinton; one daughter, Lisa Woods and companion Tony Williams of Hinton; one sister, Dorothy Tyree and husband Butch; one brother, Donald and wife Flossie Barkley of Denton, NC; seven grandchildren, Wendy Richmond of Sandstone, Carrie Wilfong of Meadow Creek, Danny Patton Jr. of Charleston, Jacob Patton of Hinton, Jordan Patton of Lerona, Matthew Massie and companion Lindsay Funk of Hinton, and Hunter Woods of Hinton; and two great grandchildren, Harmony Richmond and Cadie Richmond of Sandstone.
Friends may call the funeral parlors from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM on January 5, 2015. Graveside services will follow at Restwood Memorial Gardens with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV, 25802.
Sons and grandsons will be serving as pallbearers.
