Obituary

On the evening of July 2, 2026 Bernice Lou Gill Hartwell went home to be with the Lord at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born February 24, 1950 at Hinton, she was a daughter of the late Arnold Edward and Rosie Virginia Adkins Gill.

Bernice, widely known as Bertie, was a devout Christian with a love for old teapots, gardening, gospel music, thrifting, going to yard sales and studying the Bible. Bernice pursued a career and passion in healthcare and cared for many individuals towards the end of their lives. She will forever be cherished by her family and missed deeply.

Besides her parents, Bernice is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Roger Lee Hartwell; one grandchild: Nikki Lee Hartwell ; five brothers: Eugene Adkins, Hubert Gill, Arnold Edward Gill Jr. (Buzzy), Van Gill, and Billy Gill; three sisters: Janice “Tootie” Fox, Donna Kay Gill, and Dottie Gray, and several nieces and nephews.

Bernice is survived by her two sons David Lee Hartwell and companion Jackie of Elk Knob, and Rodney Matthew Hartwell and wife Felisha of Elk Knob; one grandchild, Weston Drake Hartwell; three sisters: Bonnie McGuire of Hinton, Sherry White and husband Timmy of Elk Knob and Wanda Fargo and husband Dale of Michigan; one brother: John Gill and wife Tammy of Asbury; a brother-in- law: Curtis Gray, who she loved like a brother, and several adoring nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Southern West Virginia including Connie Smith, Lisa Woods, and the rest of the Hospice Care team. The family would also like to thank her nephew, Anthony Gray for regularly visiting and helping with her care.

Funeral services will be 12:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Benny Allen officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral parlors. Burial will follow in the Upland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gary Gill, Anthony Gray, Kevin Wills, Willie Gill, Paul Gill, Marcus McGuire, Ryan McGuire and Bobby Wills.
