Vertra Smith

August 23, 1938 — September 24, 2016

Vertra Short Smith, 78, of Woodrumtown went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Ruby Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
Born August 23, 1938 at Pads Fork, Wyoming County she was a daughter of the late Isaiah and Elsie Newcomb Short.
Vertra was a member of the New Hope Church of Nazarene in Hinton and formerly attendend Bible Baptist Church in Wyoming County. She was a former CNA for Summers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Summers County ARH and a foster mother to six children, three of which she later adopted. She enjoyed singing, gardening, flowers and attending church functions. Vertra was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and caring person to all who knew her. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Vertra was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Brewer; second husband, Earl Smith; an infant son, Marty Smith; daughter, Jerida Hoyle; grandson, Zachary Trey Smith; four brothers and two sisters.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Earl Brewer and wife Evelyn of Prosperity, Jerry Smith and wife Shirlene of Christiansburg, Terry Smith and wife Barbara of Woodrumtown, Cecil Smith and wife Melissa of Woodrumtown, Eary Smith of Woodrumtown, Angela Bowers and companion Brandon Hart of Fairmont, Milisha Earhart and husband Shannon of Alderson, Tonya Plumley and husband Anthony of Talcott and Timothy Smith of Alderson; twenty five grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, September 29, 2016 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Rev. James Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery at Woodrumtown. Friends may call from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral parlors.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
